Chris Jones, interdisciplinary scholar and writer, is Emeritus Associate Professor of Systematic Theology and Ecclesiology at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and founding Head of the Unit for Moral Leadership within the Beyers Naudé Centre for Public Theology. His work brings theology, ethics and the public sphere into conversation with the complex realities of contemporary society. His research explores moral leadership, public ethics, human dignity, democracy, corruption, sustainability, medical ethics, and the future of society and public life. Increasingly, his work has focused on the interconnected crises, uncertainty, and complexity that characterise postnormal times. Chris believes that many of today’s ethical questions cannot be understood from the perspective of a single discipline. His research therefore draws on insights from theology, philosophy, the natural sciences, public policy, and the social sciences, seeking constructive dialogue across disciplinary boundaries. This interdisciplinary approach is reflected in his publications, collaborative research, and public engagement. Alongside his research work, he has contributed widely to public debate through newspapers, radio, television, and community initiatives, with the aim of making ethical reflection accessible beyond the university. Throughout his work, he seeks to promote responsible leadership, social justice, democratic accountability, and interreligious dialogue while encouraging thoughtful engagement with the moral challenges facing contemporary societies. Chris is particularly interested in how moral imagination, responsibility, and dialogue can help people and societies navigate complexity and uncertainty, and contribute to more humane, just and sustainable futures.
